C-47 Scenic Flight Experience

Take a short scenic flight with us in the American Airpower Museum’s WWII Douglas C-47 “Skytrain” Troop Transport still authentically configured inside and out as they were in 1944 when used to drop U.S Army, and British Airborne Paratroopers on their historic D-Day mission in June of 1944, as well that of Operation Market Garden in September of 1944. The “short” program includes arrival, briefing, and a scenic flight around the local area. This offering does not include the D-Day living history program, living historian participation.

C-47 D-Day Living History
Flight Experience Program

GEAR UP! Take trip back in time with the American Airpower Museum’s C-47 D-Day Living history flight experience! 

The first, and still one of its kind unique historical flight experience programs that pairs participants with living historian re-enactors who take you back in time with an immersive experience learn about the the mission, and the courageous Airborne troops themselves who were the first to land in occupied Europe on D-Day as well as the C-47 Aircraft and crews that flew into harms way to liberate Europe marking the beginning of the end of Nazi Germany. 

This is an immersive 2-hour program that begins with gearing up with our living historians, then taking part in the historic D-Day mission brief, and then board the WWII legendary C-47 as a paratrooper with our living history guides. You will then enjoy a 35-35 minute flight where you will take in the sights of the Long Island shores that mimic the beaches of Normandy and sounds of what it was like to fly onboard the “Skytrain”. You will be able to walk around the Aircrew stations, see the pilots in action, and engage with our living historians in open Q&A during the flight. 

Once back on the ground you will de-plane and be able to take photos, and have additional Q&A time permitting post flight. An incredibly memorable experience for a history buff or someone honoring a loved one who flew or jumped from the  legendary C-47 “Skytrain”.

North American AT-6D/SNJ Flight Experience

Take flight in the legendary “pilot maker” of WWII the North American AT-6D “Texan”. The Texan was the advanced trainer that United States Army Air Force pilots mastered before moving on to the famed WWII fighters such as the P-40, P-51, and F4U Corsair. Your flight will begin with a brief by our experienced pilot and ground crew on what to expect, and all required safety procedures. You will then strap in and take to the air for a 20 minute scenic flight around Long Islands shoreline and sights to see. Once you return to the museum you can “debrief” with the pilot and take some time to ask questions about the aircraft and what it was like to fly as a trainer during WWII and in the immediate years after.

Flights can be scheduled Weekly Friday & Saturday from 11:00am to 2:00pm. To request flights outside posted time blocks or for Sunday availability call the museum for inquiries.
