| You and the American Airpower Museum at Republic |
|
|
|
 |
The American Airpower Museum at Republic was
conceived, organized and created by volunteers. Today it is able to build its
exhibits, marshal its aircraft, open its doors and welcome the public because
of its roster of hard working volunteers. Simply put, without these men and
women who donate their time and talent, this institution would be little more
than a collection of vintage aircraft locked away in a distant hangar. |
Which is why we need you.
If you share our love for American aviation heritage, there is a place for you
as a volunteer at the American Airpower Museum. Regardless of where
your talents lie, there are tasks to be done that ensure that this institution
remains vibrant and alive - able to meet its mission of honoring those who
protected our freedoms.
Its volunteer corps reflects a broad and diverse group of men, women and teens
from a spectrum of disciplines, age groups, and interests. |
Some of our volunteers are retirees who choose to
offer their free time at an institution where they willingly share their unique
experiences in aviation or the military with members of the visiting public.
Other volunteers are still pursuing their careers, but use their flex hours to
donate their time at the museum during the traditional workweek. Still others,
whose professional commitments keep them at work Monday through Friday, commit
their talents on weekends to ensure our continued success.

| Living Historians |
|
|
 |
As dramatic as they are, our operational aircraft can't speak. They can't tell
their stories of courage, valor and sacrifice. They can't recount the missions,
the targets and the victories. What makes this facility unique is its cadre of
living historians who appear in authentic period uniforms and flight gear to
help recreate for the public an era where our freedoms were under attack.
Some museum volunteers may appear as bomber crew members from the Eighth Air
Force. Others as pilots from the China-Burma Theater of operations. And still
others may present living history in the uniform of the Airborne divisions that
dropped from the skies over Normandy in June of 1944. The object of all of
their efforts is to present a credible, authentic presentation that honors the
veterans of American and Allied forces and the defense workers who manned the
Arsenal of Democracy.
As a living historian, you may wind up escorting students through our facility.
You may guide them up the restored control tower. You might participate in a
"mission briefing" that provides our visitors with an understanding of what it
must have been like when fleets of American fighters and bombers were prepared
to attack enemy targets. But in the end, you will help bring this facility to
life by making it relevant to those who visit and peer into a prior century.

| Exhibit Construction |
|
|
 |
Every year thousands of visitors to the American Airpower Museum at Republic
look at the various exhibits and displays and never realize that volunteers
created the entire presentation. From the parachute racks to the machine gun
tables - from the display cases to the exhibit boards, virtually everything one
sees is a labor of love created by a volunteer.
In considering your role as a volunteer, we welcome all those who have a
passion for preserving our military aviation history. Regardless of your skill
with a hammer and saw, paintbrush or straight edge, there is a role that you
can play as we build to create an image of yesterday. Carpenters, plumbers,
mechanics, electricians, graphic designers, painters, collectors & appraisers,
software programmers- the list of people who have brought their skills to the
museum is as varied and diverse as the region's economy.
And for those who don't wish to pick up a paint brush but are comfortable in
fulfilling a maintenance role, there is a never ending need for those whose
passion is keeping the place ready for public inspection. In short, if you have
a desire to help, we have the volunteer position for you at the American
Airpower Museum at Republic.

| Student Interns Up Close and Personal to Our Aviation History |
|
|
Public school and college students are regularly welcomed at the American
Airpower Museum for an internship program that propels them past their history
textbooks and straight back to 1944.
With tasks that range from exhibit construction to tour guide, interns get to
rub shoulders with history and some of the most famous aircraft ever created.
Already a number of students have begun their internships here at the museum.
Public school students come from Farmingdale, Babylon, Syosset, East Rockaway -
in short, the geographic reach of Long Island - wherever there is a profound
interest in our aviation heritage. In addition, interns are arriving from area
colleges where students seek an opportunity to not only connect with history but
add to their resume of life experiences.
