On Sunday, June 14th this year’s Flag Day is being observed at the American Airpower Museum at Republic Airport, 1230 New Highway, Farmingdale, with a request that Long Island families check their attics and storage chests for forty eight star flags that flew during World War II and consider donating them to the museum.
Museum vice president Jim Vocell explains, “Many don’t realize the importance of these World War II era flags. They represent Old Glory at a time when freedom around the world was in grave jeopardy. These flags were brought into battle, hung from defense plants and welcomed home returning soldiers, sailors and airmen. This Flag Day we are asking that these relics be entrusted to us as permanent custodians of an important chapter in our nation’s history.”
The American Airpower Museum will be open on Flag Day between 10:30 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. and will seek to fly several of their vintage World War II aircraft in tribute to the holiday and those in the military who have sworn to preserve and protect our flag and our freedom.
An admission will be charged of $10 for adults, $8 for veterans and seniors and $5 for children. Group rates are available.
